Mauregato De Asturias
Birth: c. 730
Death: c. 789

Asturian Royalty. Known as Mauregato the Usurper, he was born illegitimate son of Alfonso I and a Moorish concubine. He usurped the throne on the death of his brother -in-law, King Silo, after his widow had arranged for the succession of their nephew, Alfonso, but part of the Asturian nobility supported Mauregato who assembled an army and forced Alfonso to flee to Alva. Mauregato appropriated the power in Asturias, and proclaimed himself king. According to the legend, Mauregato called for tribute of a hundred maidens. He was said to have married Creusa which produced a son, Hermenegildo - although such a marriage has been questioned by modern historians. After his death, historian Tirso de Avilés y Hevia recorded that upon the tomb of the King was the following epitaph (translated from the Latin): “Here in Pravia lies that which was depraved.” He was succeeded by Bermudo I called The Deacon. His name has also been recorded as Mauregatus. (bio by: Iola)

My dear depraved ancestor. Over 1000 years have gone by and you live still in memory! May you live 1000 more.
