Ithaca Daily Journal, pg. 6
February 24, 1897

Washington's birthday, last Monday, was also the 90th anniversary of the birth of the venerable Samuel P. Ashley, so long a resident and citizen of Caroline, but now residing with his daughters in Nebraska. He as born in Freetown, Bristol county, Mass., February 23, 1807 and came to Caroline with his father's family in 1814 at the age of seven. His residence was continued interruptedly from that time until the fall of 1892, when, shortly after the Presidential election of that year, he removed West.

Mr. Ashley inherited strong anti-slavery predilections and principles from his mother's family and the Rounsvells who were among the first and staunchest abolitionists, both in Massachusetts and after coming to Caroline, that town then being on of the largest slave holding communities in the northern states, made so by the immigration of several slave-holding families from Virginia, Maryland and North Carolina.

Mr. Ashley, during his long life, has voted at eighteen presidential elections; seventeen in Caroline and the last one in Nebraska. He was a Republican from the organization of the party in 1856, previous to which for many years, he belonged to the Whig party. He was formerly supervisor of Caroline and during the Taylor-Fillmore regime, 1849-53, was postmaster of Speedsville. At the age of 90 he still enjoys a good degree of health,a fact due to both inherited longevity and temperate habits of life.
