Franklin's first fire chief and a retired merchant, Joseph N. Ashear, died Sunday, April 2, in a local hospital at the age of 80.
A native of Lebanon, Mr. Ashear came here at the age of 18 as a traveling merchant. He went into business for himself in Franklin, establishing a department store on Main Street that prospered through the years. He retired in 1948. Mr. Ashear has been in declining health for several years.
Born July 18 1886, he was the son of the late Nemar and Mrs. Mildred Ashear, of Syria. Mr. Ashear belonged to a number of civic clubs before illness prevented his participation. He was a Rotarian and a former member of the Woodmen of the World. He was married June 30, 1912 to Miss Eva Henry, of this country, who survives.
