Dr. Allen J. Ashcroft, 88, passed away at home, on July 2, 2016 , from complications of Parkinson’s disease. He was the loving husband of Ethel Ann (Roslin), with whom they shared 65 years of marriage. Born in Gallitzin, Pennsylvania on September 28, 1927, he was the son of the late Joseph A. and Loretta (Benden) Ashcroft. His sister, Margaret Florine Hoover died in 2014.

Allen was a graduate of Reading Central Catholic High School where he played on the school’s first football team, which ended the year with an undefeated record. After graduation he spent two years in the Navy, aboard the USS Boxer, touring the South Pacific after WWII. After his discharge from the Navy, he entered St. Francis College, and later attended the University of Pittsburgh Dental School, graduating in 1954. “Doc” would spend the next 50 years working in Dentistry, a profession he loved. Forty of those fifty years were spent in Bally, PA as the town’s dentist. He was a past President of the Reading Dental Society, and spent a number of years as an active Board Member at Gethsemane Cemetery.

“Doc” was an avid golfer, but he enjoyed most sports. He enjoyed coaching, especially baseball, and his CYO Teams were always competitive, and won several championships. He also spent 50 years as the “Voice of the Cards” announcing Central Catholic High School Football games. He loved spending a crisp fall evening in the booth surrounded by Central Alum. Allen also liked watching the “Phils” and never missed a “Fighting Irish” football game on TV.

As “Doc” approached his Golden Years his focus centered around two passions; travelling the world with Et and his friends, and spoiling his eleven grandchildren. He and Ethel travelled extensively in the Caribbean and Europe however their favorite trip was to South Africa. They also enjoyed watching their grandchildren play football, baseball, lacrosse, basketball, soccer or participating in a play or dance recital. The kids always relished when their grandparents could watch them play, and later as his health began to decline they would often reminisce about those fonder days.

In addition to his wife (Ethel), Allen is survived by his son Allen Jr., husband of Sally, Ellicott City, MD.; a son Kevin, husband of Diane, Allentown PA; a son Michael who passed away in 2013, husband of Karen, Mt. Penn; a daughter Susan, wife of Robert Strahler, Sarasota FL; a son Brian, husband of Lisa, Mt. Penn; a son Joseph, husband of Anne Denver CO; and a daughter Alisa wife of David Saganich, Acton MA. Allen and Ethel have 11 grandchildren: Chris, Brit, Alex, Meghan, Matt, Alexis, Morgan, Katelyn, Justin, Ethan and Devin.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, July 7, at 10:00 AM at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church, 2810 St. Albans Drive Sinking Spring, PA. Entombment will follow the Mass at Gethsemane Mausoleum. Friends may call on Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Edward J Kuhn Funeral home Inc. 739 Penn Ave. West Reading, is in charge of arrangements.
