Ann Chester Ashby
Birth: Feb. 12, 1836
Lincolnshire, England
Death: Mar. 3, 1918
Davis County
Utah, USA

Daughter of Thomas and Hannah Chapman Chester.

Wife of Benjamin Ashby.

Mrs. Ann Chester Ashby, widow of the late Benjamin Ashby, died early Sunday morning. Friday night she was taken very ill and continued to grow worse until the end came. She was one of the old-time residents of West Bountiful, having come here with the first company of handcarts, arriving in Salt Lake, September 17, 1850. She came to Utah with her mother and three half brothers who have preceded her in death.

She was 82 years old on the 12th of February and was born in Crowle, Lincolnshire, England. She was the daughter of John P. and Hannah Chapman Chester.

She was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Hull, England, by Benjamin Ashby, who afterwards became her husband when he was there on a mission.

They were married after he arrived home, which was about a year or so later. They have made their home in West Bountiful practically all the time since they were married. Her husband preceded her in death quite a number of years ago. Fourteen children were born to them, six having preceded her in death. The living are: Mrs. Alma Page, Mrs. Cyrus Page, Mrs. James Burningham, William, Bryant, John F. and J. Ralph. She has fifty-two grandchildren and forty-eight great-grandchildren. She was at the head of four generations on her birthday.

Funeral services were held at the Bountiful second ward meeting house Tuesday at 1 p. m. Bishop Stringham presided and the speakers were: W. O. Sessions, Alfred Burningham, Thomas Waddoups, Israel Barlow and Bishop Stringham.

Interment in the Bountiful cemetery. All of the children also her brother, William Chester of Soda Springs, Idaho, were in attendance at the funeral.

(Davis County Clipper 3-8-1918)

please note: the obituary incorrectly identifies John P. Chester as the father of Ann. John P. Chester was her paternal grandfather.
