Matilda was a daughter of George and Olive Byrd, born in Oxford township, Guernsey County, Ohio. She married in Guernsey County on Feb. 26, 1857, to James Arnold. She was the mother of at least 10 children. In the 1870 census, her mother-in-law, Narcilla Arnold, 85, was shown as living with them and 'infirm,' and in the 1880 census, her grandson, Oscar Andy, 5, was living with them. Matilda died in 1882.
