He was a 1945 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, NY, and retired from the U.S. Army in 1972, when he and his wife settled in Carmel, CA. In retirement, he taught at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA, and published a book on music harmony in 1994.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Barbara Wilson Armstrong; daughters, Diane A. Lipsey and Jeanne A. Podracky and her husband Dean, and Susan A. Capps and her husband, Benton; grandchildren, Peter & Andrew Lipsey, Brian, Rachel, Christine, & Bradley Capps, and Amanda C. Peterson.
