PENSACOLA, Fla. -- Claude Clark Armfield Jr., 85, of Pensacola, Fla., died March 17, 2004.
He was the son of the late Claude Clark Sr. and Mozelle Phillips Armfield and husband for 51 years to the late, Mary Sue Wall Armfield. A graduate of UNC Chapel Hill in 1939 and Rutgers University Stonier School of Banking in 1960, he was a bank examiner for the Charlotte branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, Va., from 1939 to 1948 and became president of Bank of Lenoir in 1954, which merged with First Union National Bank, where he retired as executive vice president in 1980.
He served in WWII in the South Pacific as a major in the Marine Corps with the First and Third Divisions and fought in the battles of Guadalcanal and Bougainville. He was member of the UNC-Moorehead Scholarship Committee from 1957 to 1980, board of visitors of Appalachian State University for 17 years, chairman of Trustees of Blowing Rock Hospital and trustee of Patterson School for Boys. He was Caldwell Man of the Year in 1966, Steward of the First Methodist Church in Lenoir, president of Lenoir Chamber of Commerce in 1961, chairman of Caldwell District Boys Scouts in 1962 and past president of Lenoir Lions Club. He was a mason, member of the Elks Lodge, the VFW and Blowing Rock Methodist Church, where he served as chairman of the finance committee. In 1995, he was the president of the Young Bankers Division of the N.C. Bankers Association and was president of N.C. Bankers Association in 1971-1972.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Mullis Armfield; sons and spouses, Claude C. "Duff" Armfield III of Lake Wylie, Phillip Wall and Alma Armfield of Pensacola; daughter and spouse, Janice and Paul Willenborg of Banner Elk, N.C.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Woodlawn Cemetery in Blowing Rock, N.C. Hamptom Funeral Home is in charge.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Blowing Rock Methodist Church, P.O. Box 1270, Blowing Rock 28645.
