Hubert Armentrout
Hubert W. Armentrout, 88, a resident of the Elkins Regional Convalescent Center for the past two years, passed away Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, at the Davis Memorial Hospital Emergency Department. He had been in failing health but death was unexpected.
He was born April 15, 1915, at Whitmer, the son of the late Robert E. Lee and Emma Good Armentrout.
On Feb. 19, 1938, he married Helen Norene Campbell, who survives.
Surviving are two sons, William Kent Armentrout and wife, Carol, of Elkins and Jerry L. Armentrout of Dayton, Ohio; and one brother, Russell Armentrout of Horseshoe Run, N.C.
Also surviving are six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Also preceding him in death were one son, Keith Armentrout and daughter-in-law, LeAnne Willoughby Armentrout; four brothers, John, Forrest, Hansel and Melvin Armentrout; and one sister, Velma Armentrout.
Mr. Armentrout was a graduate of Parsons High School in the class of 1933 and worked for the Western Maryland and Chessie railroads for 40 years, retiring in 1975.
He was a member of Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church and served as Sunday School superintendent, deacon, elder and elder emeritus.
He was affectionately known by the children as the "Candy Man." He loved the out-of-doors and was an avid hunter and fisherman.
He was inducted into the West Virginia Turkey Hunters Hall of Fame in 1995. He made various woodcrafts he liked to sell at the Randolph County Senior Center craft shows and also made grapevine wreaths.
Friends may call at the Tomblyn Funeral Home of Elkins from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday with the Rev. Jeff Falter officiating. Entombment will follow at Mountain State Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions may be made to Central West Virginia Dialysis Fund, 100 Main St., Elkins, W.Va. 26241 or the Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church, 450 Randolph Ave., Elkins, W.Va. 26241 in memory of Mr. Armentrout.
