He proudly served in the US Army in France during the Korean War.
For 25 years he was a salesman of petroleum equipment and in the later years a partner with Northwest Pump and Equipment Co. until GBS forced an early retirement.
Relinquishing his excellent athletic abilities as a downhill skier, golfer and champion tennis player, Ed showed great courage facing the paralyzing effects of GBS. His love of sports now showed in his encouragement and his presence, whenever he could in his grandchildren’s sporting activities.
He leaves Kathy Leslie, his friend of 40 years and wife of 27 years. Together they befriended disappointment with great humor, working hard to be patient with the disease and each other. They loved to travel together. Earlier Ed had taught her to ski but even with GBS he continued coaching her this time in golf. She taught him to think like a democrat and encouraged him to have as full a life as possible.
His favorite songs captured his spirit: Battle Hymn of the Republic, I Did It My Way and the theme song from Rocky. That spirit kept fighting in spite of setbacks, wheel chairs, heavy braces, and many other obstacles. Even in the last weeks of his life he managed to have his wishes come true by being surrounded by his children and grandchildren who came from all over the world to be with him at Gearhart beach.
He sadly leaves his children; Michelle Miller, husband Harry and children Levi and Nate; J o s e p h A r a t a , wife Amy, children Jake and Molly; James Arata, wife Lisa, children Jack and Peter; Anthony Arata; Nicholas Arata, and Kathy’s children who became his children too: Lisa Leslie; Don Leslie, wife Heidi and children Hailey and Taylor; and Charlette Kurfurst Leslie, children Aimee and Patrick; his two sisters Kathy Arata and Margi Arata and his beloved standard poodle Abiagael as well as many friends and relatives. His brother, Father Henri Arata, preceded him in death.
Memorial remembrances may be made to Oregon Providence Hospice, Oregon Food Bank or your favorite charity or organization.
A memorial Mass at All Saints Catholic Church and internment at Willamette National will be scheduled in the spring. Arrangements by Springer & Son.
