Donald W. Apps, Sr., age 87, of Pittsfield, Il. died Saturday evening (May 30, 2009) at his residence. He was born February 8, 1922 in Syracuse, New York, son of the late Edwin F. Apps, Sr. and Helen Coles Apps. He married Dorothy Rukgaber on March 12, 1946 at the First Christian Church in Pittsfield, Il. and she survives.
Also surviving is a daughter, Helen Earls and husband William of Pittsfield, Il.; a son, Donnie Apps and wife Tereasa of Nebo, Il.; nine grandchildren, Julie Lierly of Marietta, Georgia; Jacque Walston and husband Chris "Butch" of Pittsfield, Il., Jeffrey Lierly and wife Jaime of Dayton, Ohio, Jennifer Griffith and husband John of Marietta, Georgia, Chris Apps and wife Amber of Pittsfield, Il., Patrick Apps of Nebo, Il. Michael Earls and wife Kim of New Canton, Il., Jodi Markham and husband Rocky of Jerseyville, Il. and Michele Everhart and husband Carlton of San Antonio, Texas ; fourteen great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and a brother Edwin Apps, Jr. of Placerville, California; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Margaret Apps Alfonsetti and Jeanne Apps Elkins.
Don owned and operated the Apps Grocery Store in Pittsfield for over forty years. Following high school, Don served for forty-two months in the United States Air Force during W.W. II. He was stationed in various locations like the Philippines, Japan, and other parts in the Pacific. Don served on the Pittsfield City Council as an Alderman for one term, as well as the Pike County Board for ten years where he served as board chairman for two years. During this time he was instrumental in getting the new roof and dome of the Pike County courthouse established. Don was also a strong participant in the Martinsburg Road Paving and helped in the flood of 1993. Don loved children and worked with the Pike County Little League Association for many years. Don served the First Christian Church community of faith for many years and in many capacities. He taught Sunday School for over forty years as well as serving as deacon and an elder, and served as Chair of the Board of Elders as well as Chairman of the Executive Board several times. He received the honor of Elder Emeritus in 2000 and served on most of the committees at the church at one time or another. He also led nursing home Bible study for over thirty years. Don was also a member of the American Legion Post 152 for over sixty years and a member of the Lions Club for many years.
Services were entrusted to Airsman-Hires Funeral Home of Pittsfield, Illinois.
