Ethel L Anstaett, 96, Kansas City, Mo., died Saturday, June 12, 2004, at Bishop Spencer Place in Kansas City, Mo.
Ethel began her journey on April 9, 1908, in Osage County, Kan., when she was the last of nine children born to Fred Anstaett and Mary L Spragur Anstaett. She graduated from Osage City High School and the Jane C Stormont Hospital School of Nursing.
Ethel chose a career in school nursing and worked at Topeka High School before moving to Kansas City, Mo., to begin work for the Kansas City, Mo., public school system.
She continued her education in Philadelphia and graduated from the University of Philadelphia in 1945 with a BS in Education and a certificate in public health nursing. Ethel returned to Kansas City, Mo., public schools as health coordinator of the public schools and the U S Public Health Services. She later received a master's in education from the University of Kansas City.
In 1952, Ethel became the director of health services of the Kansas City, Mo., public schools, and she held that position until her retirement in 1972.
Ethel received many honors and awards during her lifetime, and she held many elected offices in professional and community association. She served as president of the Missouri Nurses Association and president of the Greater Kansas City Epilepsy League.
In 1971, Ethel was the recipient of the American Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation Award for Outstanding Health Service Administrator.
Ethel was a member and former officer of the Womens City Club and Presidents and Past Presidents General Assembly of Greater Kansas City.
Ethel was actively involved in the Westport Presbyterian Church, where she has served as elder and deacon.
Ethel is survived by her caring and devoted friends, along with nephews, nieces, great-nephews, great-nieces and other family members.
She will be remembered for her sense of humor, love of sports, openess to new ideas and many kind acts and deeds. Ethel lived life here on earth to the fullest, and we wish her well on her heavenly travels.
A celebration of Ethel's life was Tuesday, June 15, at Feltner Funeral Home in Lyndon, Kan. The Rev Scott Myers, of Westport Presbyterian Church in Kansas City, Mo., officiated. Burial in Lyndon Cemetery followed the services.
