Alfred A. Anderson, 90 of Hartington, died Nov 12 at his home. Services were at 2 p.m. Nov. 15 in Trinity Lutheran Church. The Rev. Kenneth Franzen and the Rev. James Orwig officiated. Burial was in the Paragon Cemetery with the Wintz Funeral Home in charge. Mr Anderson was born Jan. 8, 1884, at Hartington. He married Esther Matson Aug. 9, 1921, in Sioux Falls, S. D. He was a farmer and a feeder in Cedar County all his life. Mr. Anderson was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Cedar County Historical Society, Nebraska State Historical Society and served as county commissioner from 1922-1934.
During his years of service as a county commissioner he initiated a number of projects, including the building of farm to market roads, the drainage of the river bottom lands, and the proposal to build the Wiseman monument. He suggested several improvements for road construction equipment that were later adopted by the manufacturers.
Mr. Anderson lived his entire life on the farm homesteaded by his father. In 1969 he and his wife were presented the Ak-Sar-Ben Pioneer Farm award, which is given to those families who have owned the same farm for 100 years.
Survivors include the widow; four daughters, Mrs. Fred (Doris) Orwig of Hartington; Mrs. Vernon (Laura) Stolpe of New Castle, Mrs. Clayton (Elizabeth) Studebaker of Keyport, Wash., and Mrs. Robert (Gloria) Covlin of Denver, Colo.; 18 grandchildren; and three sisters, Mrs Hulda Austin of Fort Morgan, Colo., Mrs. Laura Nelson of Hartington, and Mrs. Leonard (Ardice) Schoenrock of Sioux City.
