John declared intention to become a United States Citizen on May 5, 1869 at District Court in St. James. On May 21, 1869 John filed for homestead claim at Jackson City, NE land office for Sec 27, twp 31, R2E for 160 acres. At Niobrara NE May 10, 1876, John filed Proof under the Homestead Act with neighboers Barny Corby and Martin Bottolfsen witness as to the truth of the affidavit. John had built a frame 1 1/2 story 18 by 24 home with six doors and 7? windows with cellar as well as a granery, stable, corncrib, chicken house, hogpen and planted about 8000 trees.
John and Hilda raised grain crops and built a herd of cattle, swine and poultry. In 1896 they retired to a home south of Hartington and son Gustav took over the farm.
After Hilda died, John made his home alternately with his sons. John died 25 Feb 1919.
