He was born on May 18, 1925 in Patrick County and was a son of James and Lucy Hill Anderson. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Era Jarrell Anderson, and a brother, Louis Anderson.
He served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Schmidt during World War II, and was a self-employed brick mason. He was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are one daughter, Cheryl Fletcher of Greensboro, N.C.; three sons, Carl A. "Andy" Anderson of Mount Airy, N.C., Dirk Anderson of Buies Creek, N.C., Beryl Anderson of Dobson, N.C.; one sister, Vivian Mitchell of Collinstown, N.C.; three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at Howell Funeral Chapel in Mount Airy, N.C., with the Rev. Todd Byrd officiating. A graveside memorial service will be held Friday, September 24 at 11 a.m. at Skyline Memorial Gardens in Mount Airy. Military rites will be conducted by VFW Memorial Honor Guard Post #2019 of Mount Airy and Post #9436 of Pilot Mountain, N.C.
