Obituary
Funeral services for Devergne Beaugh Amy, 92, will be held on Friday, January 6, 2012, at 12 p.m. at Geesey-Ferguson Funeral Home Chapel in Iota. Mrs. Amy passed away on Tuesday, January 3, 2012, surrounded by family and friends. The Reverend Mikel Polson, pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Iota, will officiate. The family requests that visitation be held at Geesey -Ferguson Funeral Home in Iota from 8 a.m. until the time of the service. A rosary will be recited in the Chapel at 10 a.m.
Mrs. Amy is survived by three sons and their families, Andre Alcide Amy, his wife Cathy, their children Amy, Debbie, Catherine and Alan and their ten grandchildren; Francis Gary Amy, his wife Peggy, their children Dana, Jeffrey and Chris, and their 10 grandchildren; George Donald Amy, his companion Shirley, and his sons Guy, Jason and Bill and his seven grandchildren. Her sister Vivian Thibodeaux also survives her. She was always grateful to have as her dear friends Gloria Matte and Debbie Zorn.
Her husband Alvin Alcide Amy, her infant daughter Joan Phyllis Amy, her parents Raoul and Philomine Dejean Beaugh, her sister Irene LeBleu and her brothers Ray Beaugh, Albert G. Beaugh and Richard (Dickey) Beaugh predeceased her.
Devergne and Alvin Amy settled near Iota on the beautiful Acadia Parish prairie raising their three sons there. She and her husband then ventured to Columbia, South America, and subsequently, to the Republic of Guinea, Africa, where he was a consultant in rice production. While in overseas, she enjoyed working on the good ship Hope when it was in port. Upon their retirement, Butte LaRose became their home. The family enjoyed many happy gatherings there throughout the year, especially at Christmas when she served her special oyster pies. It was also during this time that she was able to pursue her nursing career, working in surgery for some years. When she began to lose her sight, she became a dedicated advocate for the blind, serving as president of the local volunteer organization. One of her special projects was the audio book so that the blind could also "read" books. She ingeniously found ways to avert handicap, such as placing felt on the TV remote control keys so that she could access the important channels. She was a very strong and independent person, who met her challenges squarely. She never knew a stranger and was a gifted conversationalist who was always interested in others. She loved children and never forgot a child's name once she knew it. She loved people and they loved her.
