Oscar Ray Amos, 84, of Springfield, Mo., passed away September 22, 2007, in Cox Hospital. Born October 17, 1922, in his family's home near Eureka Springs, Ark., he was the youngest of nine children born to Riley Russell Amos and RosaLee Koontz Amos. Oscar enlisted in the U.S. Navy on August 8, 1941, and was honorably discharged on Christmas Day, 1946. He served abord the U.S.S. New Mexico prior to and throughout World War II in the Pacific Theater and then abord the U.S.S. Helena until his separation date. He was a life member of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union Local 178 which he joined following trade school in October of 1949. Oscar was a long-time member of the East Sunshine Church of Christ family. He was deeply devoted to his family and to every endeavor he labored in. Mr. Amos was preceded in death by his parents; brothers and sister; and his wife of 57 years, Thelma Deloris (Walden) Amos. Oscar is survived by his son, James R. Amos; his grandchildren, Kharma Rae Amos, Jeremy Phillip Amos, Nathan Paul Amos and Jamie Elizabeth Amos; his great-grandsons, Gavin Maec Amos and Talan Isak Amos; his sister-in-law and brothers-in-law; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, September 27 in Greenlawn Funeral Home South with Stanley Maiden officiating. Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. until the service on Thursday. Burial with military honors will be at 2 p.m. in the Missouri Veteran's Cemetery. Per Springfield News Leader
