Joseph and his accomplices were convicted in a jury trial in 1933 for setting fire to the Silver Furniture store in Centralia, Illinois. He was sentenced to 1-10 years in the Chester, Illinois penitentiary. He died within months after beginning his sentence. Arteriosclerosis was the cause of death.
His wife died several years before leaving him a widower with 6 children. Joseph's death in prison made them all orphans.
