Faye Mitchell Altizer, age 95, of Christiansburg, died peacefully on Friday, December 28, 2012 surrounded by family. She was born in Alum Ridge, VA. to parents, Ezra and Sadie R. Mitchell on July 19, 1917. She graduated valedictorian from high school, even though she was out of school for two years with rheumatic fever. Her education continued at National Business College in Roanoke, VA., where she taught classes after graduation. Later, she worked for Appalachian Power Co. in Roanoke until 1944 when she and husband, Lowell Altizer left to attend Freed Hardeman College in TN. There Lowell prepared to be a minister for the Church of Christ. Together, they worked as a team for the cause of Christ establishing congregations in Christiansburg, Radford, Blacksburg, Pearisburg and Collinsville. She was preceded in death by Lowell, her husband of 62 years; her parents; grandson Chad Johnson; sister Mable M. Wheeler and husband Zenas Wheeler; sister-in-law Mary Mitchell; brother-in-law Harless Howlett; and niece Joan Howlett Cox. She is survived by two daughters and spouses, Sandra and Dennis Johnson of Hendersonville, TN. and Suzi and David Rogers of Atlantic Beach, FL; grandchildren and spouses, Nicole Singleton of Gallatin, TN., Amanda and Jay Griffin of Jacksonville, FL., Brooke and Val Kovalenko of Jacksonville, FL.; great-grandchildren, Alexis and Savannah Singleton of Gallatin, TN., Leah and Sadie Griffin and Sophia Faye and Nathan Kovalenko all of Jacksonville, FL.; her brother, Ray Mitchell of Floyd, VA., and sister, Maynis (Mitch) Howlett of Christiansburg, VA., sister-in-law, Gloria Altizer of Roanoke, VA., along with several nephews and nieces. Visitation and funeral services will be at Horne Funeral Home, Christiansburg, VA. The family will receive friends from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon Thursday, January 3, 2013 with the service at 12:00. Dennis Curd, minister of the Christiansburg Church of Christ will conduct the services. Interment will be a private family service in the mausoleum at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, in Christiansburg. The family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Michael Payne and Dr. Lee Mathis for their wonderful care while Faye lived in Christiansburg. Also, thanks to Northeast Florida Community Hospice in Jacksonville for their gentle comfort care.
