54, wife, mother & special education teacher

Amy Egan Altenburger, 54, of Mendham, NJ passed away on May 28th, at her home with her husband and daughters at her side, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born in Buffalo, NY on August 22nd, 1954, she grew up in Tonawanda where she attended Mt. St. Mary's Academy. She graduated from SUNY Buffalo in 1976. After graduating, she worked as a social worker for the elderly and mentally disabled, before devoting her time to raising her four girls, Allison, Eileen, Erin and Jillian. She was a selfless individual, continually putting the needs of others before her own while lending her gentle spirit and guidance.

She earned Masters of Education and Special Education Degrees from St. Elizabeth's College. She later taught at St. Patrick's Elementary School, Alfred Vail School and New Providence High School and Middle School, where she worked as a special education teacher. She was tirelessly committed to her students, to both their education and growth as individuals.

Despite the severity of her illness, she continued to approach life with an unwavering positive outlook. She was an incredibly strong woman, who touched the lives of all those she encountered.

Amy and her family would like to thank all of her friends, family and health providers for their constant love, care and support.

She is survived by: parents, Mary and Edwin Egan of Tonawanda, NY; brothers: Dr. Kevin Egan of West Caldwell, NJ, Sean Egan of Haverford, PA, Dan Egan of East Amherst, NY, Bill Egan of San Francisco, California; sisters: Martha Hassenfratz of Clarence, NY, Anne Egan of Buffalo, NY, Ellen Kavanaugh of Orchard Park, NY and Nora Egan of Buffalo, NY. She is also survived by her husband, Raymond and their daughters, Allison, Eileen, Erin and Jillian. Viewing will be held at Bailey's Funeral Home, 8 Hilltop Rd, Mendham from 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. on June 1st. Funeral mass will be held on June 2nd at 10:30 at St. Joseph's Church, 6 W. Main St., Mendham.
