He was a resident of Charleston for more than 40 years. He was a retired/owner of Johnny's Grocery in Charleston from 1950-1972.
He served in the U.S. Army as a platoon sergeant of artillery - Third Division. He received seven bronze stars.
He was a graduate of East Bank High School and a member of Sacred Heart Co-Cathedral. He was a member of the Sons of Italy, American Legion and a member of GNL Tours.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 54 years, Julia Grake Allessio.
He is survived by his daughter, Mary A. Koehler and husband, Mark of Middleburg Heights, Ohio; and a son, John A. and his wife, Laura of Virginia Beach, Va.; two sisters, Catherine Allessio and Rose Walker, both of Charleston; three grandchildren, Christopher Koehler, A.J. and Mackenzie Allessio.
Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 13, at Sacred Heart Co-Cathedral with Father E. Sadie officiating.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12 at Barlow-Bonsall Funeral Home with a prayer service at 4 p.m. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston.
