Dr. A. Dale Allen Sr., 93, Hewitt, Texas, died in Texas.

Born Dec. 6, 1900 in Greensburg, he was the son of William E. and Florence McHenry Allen. He married Dorothy Verna Thorne June 7, 1927, and she survives.

He received a bachelor's from DePauw University in 1924; a master's from Indiana University in 1942 and an Ed.D. from Indiana University in 1955. He was a high school teacher and administrator in the state of Indiana 30 years. He served as Indiana State School Commissioner for two years and was on he faculty of Indiana University for seven years. He was University Administrator at Indiana University of Pennsylvania for 15 years. He was First President of Phi Delta Kappa chapter of Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He was First Lieutenant in the Army Reserve for six years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hewitt, Texas. He was a former member of Calvary Presbyterian Church of Indiana, Pa., until moving to Hewitt in August of 1993. He was a 40-year member of Kiwanis; a member of the Masonic Lodge 313 of Indiana, Pa; the Jaffa Shrine of Altoona, Pa., and the National Education Association. At DePauw he was Rector Scholar in History and founder of Delta Chi fraternity.

In addition to his widow, he is survived by a daughter, Patricia Smerling, Muncie, Ind.; a son, Dr. A. Dale Allen Jr., Waco, Texas; two sisters, Mrs. Micki Flake of Indianapolis and Mabel Dams of Greensburg; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

One son, Gene D. Allen preceded him in death May 2, 1983, and he was also preceded in death by one brother and three sisters.

Services will be 3 p.m. Thursday at the Hewitt First Baptist Church, Hewitt, Texas.

The Rev. Steven Wood of Greensburg First Baptist Church will conduct a prayer service at 1 p.m. Monday at Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home, Greensburg.

Burial will be in South Park Cemetery, Greensburg.

Visitation will be Sunday at the Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home from 2 to 5 p.m.

Memorials may be sent to Hewitt First Baptist Church, 301 S. First St., Hewitt, Texas.
