Fern E. Allen, 88, a resident of Heritage South, died Thursday. Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. The Rev. George Wheat will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Cemetery.
Mrs. Allen was born July 27, 1893, at Newport, the daughter of William and Addie Musselman Farr. She grew up and received her education at Newport, also attending Peru State Teachers College. She then taught in Rock County schools. She married Frank McKeown on June 14, 1914, at Newport. They lived in Newport. He died in 1916.
On June 6, 1923, she married Frank Allen at O'Neill. They farmed near Newport until 1942 when they moved to the Grand Island area. Mr. Allen died in 1976. Lately she had been a resident of Heritage South. Mrs. Allen was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church of Grand Island and the Rebekah Lodge of Newport.
Survivors include a son-in-law, Richard Barber, and a daughter-in-law, Mona Barber, both of Grand Island; two granddaughters, Faye Zmek of Chapman and Diane Allen of Webster, N.Y.; two grandsons, Richard and Bruce Allen, both of Grand Island; a great-granddaughter, Shayle Zmek, and a great-grandson, Ryan Zmek. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Thelma; a son, Duane, four brothers and a sister.
