Funeral services for Mrs. Avel A. Spears, age 90, of Roanoke, will be held Saturday, April 17, 2010 at 2:00 pm, from the Highway Congregational Methodist Church with Rev. Vernon Willis officiating. Mrs. Spears will lie in state one hour before the service at the church. Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery with Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee in charge of arrangements.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, April 16, 2010.
Mrs. Spears died, Thursday, April 15, 2010 at Roanoke Health Care.                                 
Mrs. Spears is survived by three daughters, Brenda (husband Wesley) Benefield of Oxford, Joy (husband Thomas) Rollins of Roanoke, Marlene (husband Jerry) Lindley of Wedowee; one son, Gary (wife Judy) Spears of Roanoke; one sister, Bobbie Baughn of Bowden, GA; one brother, Simeon (wife Myrtle) Allen of Heflin; twelve grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Kevin Spears, Craig Baldwin, Randy Spears, Brian Lindley, Brandon Benefield, Justin Benefield, Andrew Sewell and Colby Spears. Honorary pallbearers will be Lane Elliott, Landon Elliott, Chandler McCain, Holden McCain and Hunter Cotton.
Mrs. Spears was born, April 6, 1920, the daughter of Otis Victor and Vassie Smith Allen. She was a member of Highway First Congregational Methodist Church, a homemaker, and a member of the Highway Church Women's Group. Mrs. Spears was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Spears; infant twin daughters, Loyce and Joyce Spears; six sisters; one brother.
