Had Been Ill Some Time, Undergoing Operation Last Month
Arthur Mahone Allen, 59-year old veteran detective with the Norfolk Police Department died last night at 9:40 o'clock at St. Vincent Hospital, where he underwent a major operation March 17.
Allen, widely known here as "Bub", had been connected with the police department for more than 37 years and was one of the department's oldest men from the standpoint of service.
He went to sea for several years as a young man, and at the age of 22 joined the police force here December 6, 1904, as a substitute patrolman. He was promoted to the rank of patrolman February 24, 1905, less than three months after joining the department and on August 9, 1928, he was appointed to the detective bureau, where he was assigned to special criminal investigations.
Commenting on Allen's death last night, Chief of Police John F. Woods said: "We are losing an excellent man. Detective Allen was most dependable and was well equipped for the work he did."
Allen was a veteran of two wars, having served in the Spanish American War at the age of 15 and having served as a sergeant in the World War for 13 months prior to the signing of the Armistice.
He was a member of the American Legion.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mary Huff Allen; a brother, John Allen, of Washington, D.C. and a sister, Mrs. G.H. Riddle, all of Norfolk. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The body has been removed to the James V. Derry Funeral Home, Colley and Harrington Avenues. Funeral arrangements are to be announced later.
