Ed had a larger-than-life personality known to many Memphians during the 70's and 80's where he worked for the City of Memphis in several capacities and assisted a local television station in promotions. He enjoyed organizing public functions for the City and logistics for large public venues, especially gatherings featuring food and friends. An avid Shriner, Ed spent much of his off time dressed as a clown, visiting critically ill children in the City's hospitals. His all-or-nothing involvement in the lives of his friends made him a welcome respite to the increasingly impersonal culture around him. He never compromised his beliefs or turned his back on those who came to him for help.
Ed will be remembered by those who knew him best as a caring, concerned individual with a gruff exterior and a surprisingly empathetic heart. An active member of Sardis Lake Baptist Church until the time of his illness. He was a committed Christian who deeply revered the Lord and had a very sincere means of showing it. He was completely authentic and honest in his relationships, sacrificial to a fault, and had no idea how to be anything else. Ed was one-of-a-kind; and unforgettable and singular person, who can never be replaced. We will miss him deeply.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Velma Allen; and wife, Vera Jennell Allen.
Survivors are a hose of friends who loved him including his Caretakers, Dr. Robert and Missy Corkern ad the Staff who cared for him at the Choctaw Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Ackerman.
Services were held in the Chapel at Coleman Funeral Home with visitation from 10:30 to 11:00 and funeral at 11:00 a.m. The services was officiated by Pastor Rob Faulk of Chester Baptist Church on September 17, 2016. Interment will be at Chester Baptist Cemetery near Ackerman, MS.
Memorials may be sent to Chester Baptist Church, Forever Family Life Center at 177 West Road, Ackerman, MS 39735.
