DIED
ALLEN – Feb. 23, 1880, at the residence
of her parents, on Elm St., First Ward,
Kittie, daughter of Thos. and Elizabeth
Allen, aged 3 years and 7 months.

"CRUEL, CRUEL FLAMES
HORRIBLE FATE OF A LITTLE GIRL"
The saddest event of which we have yet
been called upon to write, was one which
took place in the city on Monday afternoon
last. Two children of Tho. Allen, a boy and
a girl, aged respectively six and three and
a half years, were plying in the hay mow of
their father’s barn, when by some means that
must forever remain a mystery, the hay took
flame. The little boy immediately effected
his escape, at the same time calling on his
sister to follow, but the latter for some
cause delayed too long, and fell victim to
the cruel flames. The flames had so
completely enveloped the building
before an alarm was sounded, that all
efforts of the firemen to stay their
progress were futile, and not until
the building was entirely consumed were
the remains of the child recovered.

Little Kittie, as they called her, was
one of those bright, warm-hearted, lovable
children, that find a warm place in the
affection of everybody who knows them.
She was the pet of the family, and her
sudden and terrible death brings the most
poignant sorrow to her devoted parents,
brothers and sisters. The have the deepest
sympathy of the entire community in their
sad affliction. Had Kittie lived until
next July she would have been 4 years
old. The funeral services took place on
Tuesday afternoon, and were conducted
by Rev. C.H. Dunlap, of the First
Presbyterian Church, of which Mr.
and Mrs. Allen are members.

Note: Details concerning the condition of the
body and coroner’s inquest were deleted
because of space limitations. A similar article
appeared in ‘NEW CASTLE COURANT’, same
date, on page 1.
