Nelson was a direct descendant of John and Betty More's Jean line. He was the only child of James Rogers Allaben, Jr. and Anna Lina McNitt Allaben. Nelson's father died when he was only two-years of age and he was raised at Morris, New York in the home of his maternal grandparents. He and his mother relocated to Morriestown, New Jersey about 1900 where she was a physician. At that place, in 1910, Nelson was an assistant manager of a hardware store. He married to Anna Virginia Babbitt on 30 October 1912 at Newark, New Jersey. They made their home first at Boston, Massachusetts where he was a travelling salesman with Manning, Maxwell, and Moore, Inc. They returned to Morristown about 1920 where his wife was a shop milliner and he a salesman. Nelson and Anna were the parents of one child, Hope Virginia Allaben.
