Birth: May 30, 1901
Washington County
Pennsylvania, USA
Death: Jan. 27, 1972
Washington County
Pennsylvania, USA

Daughter of John Fredrick and Margaretta Barbara (Rishert) Godfrey, who were married on 29 Nov 1900 in Monongahela, Washington County, Pennsylvania. Her father was a British immigrant, born in England about 1878.

Marriage: James Russell Alger Sr
Date: 14 Feb 1923
Location: Donora, Washington Co., PA
Outcome: Divorced
4 Children:
i. Virginia May
ii. James Russell
ii. Florence Elaine
iii. Arlene

** Elsie and all the children have added the consonant "s" to the end of their surname. I originally thought that Elsie did this deliberately because my grandfather had, as she says, "abandoned" the family. That theory, however, was blown out of the water upon my 31 Dec 2015 discovery of their only son, who died at age 3 in 1928. This son's name appears on his headstone as James Russell Algers, yet was documented on his death certificate as James Russell Alger, son of James Alger and Elsie Godfrey. How it could ever appear otherwise on his headstone is a mystery!

Elsie was the first wife of my grandfather before he made my grandmother wife #2... No one in the family had any idea that he had been married before, so the discovery of this became quite a shocker for all of us... Of course, we didn't really know our grandfather either because he also abandoned my grandmother with 3 young children to raise... but the stories about him flourished, even long after he and wife #3 had passed away!

U.S. Census: 6 Apr 1940,
Fallowfield Twp, Washington Co., PA

Interestingly, Elsie indicated that they had lived in the same rental home for at least the past 5 years, paid monthly rent of $4, was not employed, not seeking employment, had no source of income and reported $0 household income in the past year. She also stated that she was still married, I assume because she did not know that she had long been divorced.

There seems to be some conflict as to Elsie's exact date of death. Per the Social Security Death Index, she passed away on 15 Jan 1972. But a recent discovery of the following obituary has a different date of death. I contacted the cemetery and found out that her daughter, Florence, was buried on the same plot (a double plot) with her. The cemetery confirms that she died on 27 Jan 1972 and was buried on 30 Jan 1972.

All pertinent information I have included here can be verified by U.S. Federal Census Records for the family in conjunction with various public records, including any documents I may upload to this memorial.

Though I can not prove with 100% certainty that this family's composition and relation status is as I display it to be, I can say that the circumstantial evidence weighs very heavily in favor of the accuracy of these stated familial connections.
