|Birth: ||May 15, 1950|
|Death: ||Mar. 11, 2013|
Donald Timothy Alger, 62, of Roscommon, MI, died Monday, March 11 in Corpus Christi, TX. Don was born to the late Russell and Donna Alger of Davison, MI on May 15, 1950. He graduated from Davison High School in 1968 and received a BA from Central Michigan University in 1972.
Don married Sherrie Baker of Otter Lake, MI in 1975, and they lived in Waterford, MI before relocating to Roscommon in 1998. He was a life-long supporter of the CMU Chippewas and enjoyed attending football games with his family and friends. Don and Sherrie have spent the last five winters in Port Aransas, TX where Don spent his time fishing. Don was an automobile worker with GM for 30 years. Don worked for Pontiac Motors and the Orion Plant before moving to the Saginaw Grey Iron Foundry in 1998. Don was a proud member of the UAW and was Vice-President of UAW Local 668 for many years. Before Don retired, in 2009,
he was Interim President of Local 668 following in his father's footsteps becoming the second local union president in his family as his father, Russell, was president of UAW Local 581 in Flint during the early sixties. During his retirement, Don also worked with Ogemaw & Iosco Counties in their social services division assisting the deaf and the physically / mentally challenged with job and life skills helping them to become self-sufficient. Don loved all of his clients and was very proud of them.
Don was a life-long Democrat, a fierce UAW member and a true advocate for the little guy. He insisted upon good citizenship as a prerequisite to be taken seriously. Don was always a presence in the room and was not afraid to uncover an unattractive truth if necessary. He challenged people to see things as they actually were but he did it with compassion and brains and love. Don fought for truth and equality his whole life and his memory serves as a map, for those of us who remain, to follow.
Don is survived by his wife, Sherrie; his daughter and her husband, Christina and Eric Johnson of Lansing, MI and their daughter, Don's beloved granddaughter, Eliana Grace Johnson; and his son, Charlie Alger, of Kalamazoo, MI. He is also survived by three sisters, three brothers, two brothers-in-law, two sisters-in-law, and many nieces and nephews.
The family is honoring Don's request that family and friends gather for a celebration of his life near his birthday in mid-May. Details will be forthcoming.
