A memorial service will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, December 3 at Howard Memorial Presbyterian Church in Tarboro with the Rev. Ben Kane officiating.

Jim was born in the small community of Whitakers, North Carolina on the Nash County side of town on December 21, 1938 to L.E. and Geneva Alford. He was a graduate of Whitakers High School and went on to graduate from North Carolina State University with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering.

Following college, Jim went on to work for the Sprint Corporation as an Engineering Manager where he served the communities of Tarboro, Ahoskie, Fayetteville, Wilson and New Bern. As an Outside Plant Engineer, Jim was charged with designing cable and facilities to serve the residential areas. In Tarboro, he was the Manager of Facilities Engineering which included the tasks of planning, designing and engineering of the intercity long distance network for North Carolina and the design of all data and other “special services” for other North Carolina communities. In the final three years of his career, Jim served as New Products Evaluation Manager in which he set standards for equipment used in the entire Sprint Corporation. Major projects he worked on included the design and selection of power equipment for all areas of operation, making models for engineering ordering a complete system by sings order number for the Sprint System.

Jim was also actively involved in many pastimes, hobbies and athletic programs. In high school, he was a member of the football, basketball and baseball teams. At NC State, he played freshman baseball and several intramural sports. At State, he was also a dormitory president and a member of the N.C. State Interdormitory Council for 2 years.

In Tarboro, he coached Little League and also served on the Tarboro Athletic Boosters Club Board of Directors as both a member and president, along with serving as a member of the Tarboro Jaycees. He was a life member and founder of the Tarboro Bassmasters; the oldest continuously active B.A.S.S. club in North Carolina which was chartered in 1972. As a leader of this organization, he was able to assist in raising funds for the Special Olympics and sponsoring his Little League.

On a professional level, Jim was a past president of East Carolina Engineering Club and was a member of the Board of Directions of the N.C. Society of Engineers. In the NCBASS Federation, Jim served as the charter secretary and treasurer for 5 years and was a member of the Board of Directors for 7 and was a former member of the Board of Directors of the NC Wildlife Federation.

He was a life member of the Masons in Concord Lodge #58 of Tarboro, having served as Master and secretary of the local lodge, Distrust Deputy Grand Master of the 18th Masonic District of North Carolina for 3 years and was a 33rd degree Scottish Rite Mason.

Retirement did not end Jim’s dedication or service to his community. He served as a councilman for the city of Tarboro for 12 years, as a member of the Board of Commissioners NCEMPA (N.C. Power Association) member of the Area Council of Government (COG), and past chairman of the Edgecombe County Red Cross Blood Committee. During worship, Jim could be found at Howard Memorial Presbyterian Church where he was a faithful member for many years.
