David R.Alexander, a former well known resident and for many years proprietor of the Alexander knitting mill in this city died suddenly of pneumonia in the home of his daughter, Mrs.Blanche Wetzel in Mattoon, yesterday. He was 76 years old. For the last few months Mr. Alexander's health had been failing. Within the last two months he suffered two strokes of paralysis. He was slowly recovering from the last attack when pneumonia developed a few days ago. He died Friday morning at 11 o'clock. Because of the gradual decline of his health, the lung disease proved fatal.
Mrs. E. A. West and T.Scott Alexander, daughter and son respectively of the well-known man were summoned early yesterday morning but did not reach Mattoon until noon an hour after their parent died. The body will arrive in Decatur Sunday afternoon for burial in Greenwood cemetery.
To all the older residents of Decatur, David Alexander was well and favorably known. He came to Decatur about 40 years ago and a few years later started the knitting concern that bore his name for many years, in the old Guards armory building in the 100 block E. North street. About 15 years ago he disposed of the manufacturing business and moved to Argenta where he was engaged for a number of years as government gauger at the Dantown distillery. During his long residence in Decatur, Mr.Alexander was one of the influential citizens. He was prominent in public affairs and an earnest worker in the Republican party. He never held public office but was a strong advocate of his party.
David R.Alexander was born in Greenfield, Tenn, Feb. 10, 1835. Besides his wife, Mrs. Mary O. Alexander he leaves the following children: Mrs. E. A. West, T.Scott Alexander of this city, A. B. Alexander and Troy Alexander of New York and Mrs.Blanche Wetzel of Mattoon with whom he has been making his home the last summer.
Mr. Alexander was a member of the First Presbyterian church in this city, and while in Decatur was a worker in that organization.
The funeral services will be conducted in the Wetzel home in Mattoon, Sunday morning by Rev.W. H. Penhallegon of this city. The body will arrive in Decatur at 2 o'clock over the Illinois Central railroad and will be taken to Greenwood cemetery where short services will be conducted at the grave.

The large stone was laying down when the first pictures was taken and in bad shape but the Greenwood cemetery workers have put the stone back up.
