The Alexander family has been a tradition in Lockport township from the earliest days. The family has been a cultural leader in the community.
A SON OF the late James H. and Laura Haywood, Mr. Alexander lived his entire life in the same house, a mansion that was built in the 1860's by his father. His father served one term in the state legislature and was campaigning for re-election at the time of his death.
A farmer by occupation, he had served in World War I and was with the tank corps at Camp Polk in Raleigh, N.C. For the last 37 years he was a member of the board of directors of the First National Bank of Lockport.
WELL-VERSED in farming, he served as a judge at the annual Wheatland Plowing match for many years.
In June 1903, Mr. Alexander married Helen M. Baker of Manhattan, the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John C. Baker. Of this marriage, eight children were born.
His only sister, Laura, was married to Herbert Johnson, who was the business manager of the Chicago Civic orchestra in the 1920's.
For many years Mr. Alexander was active in the John Olson post of the American Legion.

Emery of Hawthorne, CA; Mrs. Gilbert Durrer of Alexandria, VA; three sons, James L. of Joliet, John J. and Herbert Hayes of Lockport; a sister, Mrs. Laura A. Johnson of Chicago, and 20 grandchildren.
