Frances Alexander Dobin
Dec. 17, 1927-Apr. 21, 2017
Danville

Frances Dobin died peacefully in her sleep on April 21 at her home in Danville. She was born on December 17, 1927, in Trenton, New Jersey, to Louis Jacob Alexander and Kate Garb Alexander, and lived in Trenton until she met and married the love of her life, Joel Dobin.

Frances loved and supported her husband through his Princeton degree in 1948 and his Rabbinic studies, which he completed in 1954. Married on December 31, 1950, they had 61 years together until Joel's death in 2012. Frances was the quintessential rabbi's wife, accompanying him as he served Reform congregations in Louisiana; Rochester and Niagara Falls, New York; Pennsylvania; and Massachusetts; with his lengthiest pulpit being at Sinai Reform Temple in Bay Shore, New York. During these years, she raised four children, celebrated Jewish rituals throughout the community in partnership with her husband, and worked as an administrative assistant to help support the family. Always a lover of children, Frances spent 10 satisfying years as a library assistant in the Bay Shore School District. Later in Joel's career, she went with him as he served congregations in Fort Pierce, Florida; Amarillo, Texas; and in Livermore, from which he retired in 1995. Joel and Frances lived in Rossmoor for 12 years, and moved together to the Reutlinger Community for Jewish Living in Danville in 2007.

Frances was always active in her community and, even in her last years, was the "welcome committee" to new residents and "mama" to many staff at the Reutlinger Community. As a "working mother" long before the phrase was coined, her intelligence, outgoing nature, ready smile, and ability to juggle multiple tasks helped to keep everything together in a busy and public household. In their retirement years, Frances and Joel took multiple cruises around the world and enjoyed travelling in the US to visit their children and grandchildren.

Frances is survived by her four children: Loui Dobin (Sheila) of Texas, Sarah Shields (William Merryman) of North Carolina, Deborah Dobin (Scott Robinson) of Lafayette, and Rachel Satterwhite (Michael) of Texas. She is survived by 6 grandchildren: Jonathan (Hallie) and Zachary Dobin, Kate Shields (Mark), Ian Shields (Melissa), Matt Robinson, and Joseph Satterwhite, and one great-grandchild. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Marilyn Alexander, Gloria Dobin, and Marcia Durben, and her brothers-in-law Edward Dobin and David Durben, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Services were held on April 23 at Temple Isaiah in Lafayette, with burial at Oakmont Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Frances' memory can be made to any of the following: the Resident Assistance Fund, Reutlinger Community for Jewish Living, 4000 Camino Tassajara, Danville, CA 94506; Temple Isaiah, 945 Risa Road, Lafayette, CA 94549; or URJ Greene Family Camp, P.O. Box 1468, 1192 Smith Lane, Bruceville, Texas 76630.
