Eino Frederick Alanen, 47, of 815 Michigan Street, passed away at 4:30 Tuesday morning, January 2 at the Ontonagon Memorial Hospital. He had been in failing health for the past three years and entered the hospital New Year's Eve.
"Fred" as he was known by was born November 17, 1914 at Greenland and received his high school education in the Mass school. Prior to induction in the U. S. Army in October 17, 1941, he was employed in Detroit as an inspector of fluid drive for the Chrysler Corp.
He served for 25 months with the U. S. Army's 16th Engineers Armored Division, seeing action in Tunisia, Algeria, Sicily and Italy. For outstanding service in the line of duty, he was decorated with the Service Medal Citation, the Defense Service Ribbon, Eane campaign ribbon and two Bronze Stars.
Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Ludger Belanger with whom he resided, one brother Larry Alanen of Mountain View, California and a sister, Mrs. Charles (Nelmi) Boza of Livonia.
The Allan Cane Funeral Home opened to friends Wednesday afternoon.
Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the funeral home with the Rev. James P. McKeever to officiate. His body will be placed in the receiving vault at Maple Grove Cemetery, Greenland.
Mrs. Charles Boza is expected to arrive today to attend the funeral.
