Decatur County Journal April 2, 1914. It read,
Death of Henry Akes-Granville Henry Akes was born in Jefferson County, Iowa,
September 14, 1854. Died at his home in Leon, March 27, 1914, aged 60 years, 6
months and 13 days. He has been in poor health for some time but for four
weeks had been bed-fast and all that loving hearts and kind hands could do was
done. He was converted fourteen years ago and joined the Palestine Baptist
church and has been a consistent member ever since, and has gone to his reward.
He leaves beside his companion of forty years, nine children, two girls and
seven boys, who were present at the last service, four sisters and four
brothers besides scores of old friends. Three years ago, together with his
wife and youngest daughter, he moved to Leon and has since made his home here.
Brother Akes, during his last illness was constantly telling those at his
bedside that the Lord was with him.
Funeral services were held at the Palestine church, March 29th, conducted by
Rev. Chas. W. Reeder, attended by many of his old neighbors and friends, and
all of the family was present but one sister. The remains were laid to rest in
the Palestine cemetery.
The family wish to extend thanks for the kind assistance rendered during his
last sickness.

!Occupation was a farmer. Information from family records say that Henry was a
strict, loving parent and husband. Before he joined the Church he worked 7
days a week and expected the same of others. Afterwards he attended the
Palestine Baptist church near Leon
