"Chuck"...Son of Clarence Lewis & Mary Ann (ARMSTRONG) Akes...1934 moved to Yakima, WA...23 Feb 1934 married Esther Elaine SPENCER...Lived in Klickitat Co, WA; Wallowa Co, OR & Milton-Freewater OR...Father of Lucia J, Roberta G, Esther E, & Charles L Jr...Obit Blue Mountain Pioneer, Milton-Freewater OR, 28 Jan 2003, Page 5.

He was raised in SD and the Yakima Valley, in Washington State. After he served in WWII he returned to Yakima Washington working for Akes Hauling service until about 1946 when they moved to Cleavland WA to a small farm. This is in Klickitat Co. close to Bickleton. After 3 years they moved to a wheat ranch near Roosevelt, Klickitat County, WA. This was close to the Columbia River. The family was active in 4-H with both Chuck and Elaine as leaders, Grange with lots of family dances and other grange activities. PTA, which both parents were President of at different time. And Sunday School held at the School House. It was a good place to raise a family. In 1955 they bought the Divide Cattle ranch which is near Joseph Oregon in Wallowa County. This was high in the mountains, and while very beautiful is a rugged place to live. There was no electricity, but a power plant took care of that, and gas provided emergency lights and stove and refrigerator etc. We had one of the first TV's around as we were high enough to pick up the signal. The children went to school in a pink and grey jeep with a two way radio, never missing a day of school no matter the weather. Chuck just took the cat and cleared the road. Family movie film has been put on video and brings back alot of memories of what living on the ranch was like. About 1961 the ranch was sold to the Teeples and Thatcher company and Charles went into the construction business. They moved to Milton Freewater OR and bought a farm that they have remodeled the house and turned it into a comfortable home. They joined the Morman church in the 70's and have been very involved with service to it. Chuck was the Bishop for many years and they both spent a lot of time supporting the church. Dad put in a lot of State parks and later installed and maintained swimming pools. As their health declined, Dad became Mom's caregiver. As the end neared we moved Mom to the Retirement home and after a bout in the hospital Dad joined her. He said he wanted to be sure they knew how to care for her as he had done so for several years. They shared a room for two day when he passed away.
