John J Aitkin one of Mifflin County most highly esteemed citizen and life lone resident of the county passed away at his home in Newtown on Thursday afternoon Jan 26 at half past 2pm. He has been a patient sufferer from cancerous tumor for more than 2yr. About one year ago an operation was attempted at PA Hospital at Phila, but it was found that they tumor could not be removed without causing his immediate death. He has suffered intensely during the past year but always with submission to the will of his Maker. He will ever be held in memory for his sterling upright character. He has been a member of Pres. Church since he was 16yr of age was a deacon had been elder in the church for a number of years. He was also a charger member of Burnham Pres. Church. He was a strong advocate of temperance from boy hood and an active member of Prohibition party. Mr. Aitkin was a descendant from one of Mifflin County earliest families. He was born near Siglerville Armagh Twnp Pa on Dec 25 1848 and was aged 58y1m at time of his death. His parents were John M & Catherine Aitkin. On Dec 25 1872 he married to Margaret Sigler daughter of Joseph Sigler of Paintersville PA. He leaves to mourn his death his aged mother his wife 3 children J White of Decatur Twnp , Frances B & Edmund C who resides at the parental home. Of a family of 7 children 3 survive him his sister Mrs. J R Sterrett and brother Wm D Aitkin of Reedsville & James T Aitkin of Siglerville. Buried Vira Pres. Cemetery
