Dorothy Jean Thomas Ahart, loving wife, mother and grandmother, of Austin, passed away Tuesday, October 16, 2007.

Dorothy was born January 9, 1935 in Gonzales, Texas to Charlie B. and Dezavella Thomas. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Henry S. Ahart, Sr. and brothers Frank Thomas and Matthew Thomas.

At a very early age, Dorothy professed her faith in Jesus Christ and was baptized. She attended Gonzales public schools, graduating at sixteen-years-old from Edwards High School as valedictorian in 1953. In 1957, she graduated cum laude from Huston-Tillotson College with a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration. She taught for 12 years at Edwards High School in Gonzales, The People's Business College, Anderson High School and Kealing Junior High School in Austin.

On Easter Sunday in 1959, Dorothy married the love of her life, Henry S. Ahart, Sr. Their union was blessed with five children: Henry S. Ahart, Jr., Deborah Wells, Reginald Ahart, Rodney Ahart and Carmen Fields.

In 1967, Dorothy began her career with the Internal Revenue Service as a seasonal employee in the Research Branch. In 1969, she was selected as a permanent clerk on the Program Analysis Staff. Dorothy worked as a clerk, tax examiner and management assistant in Entity, Accounting and Computer Services. In 1988, she became a Reports Assistant on the Production and Resources Staff, Reports Unit. Two years later, Dorothy was promoted to the Work Leader position. In 1995, she was named Manager of the entire unit.

Upon retirement, Dorothy opened a small business in Gonzales, Twice Around Thrift Shop. She was an active member in PTA serving as president at Winn Elementary and LBJ High School. Dorothy also served as president of the LBJ Neighborhood Association, working to establish the first neighborhood park and a retaining wall to provide flood control from Walnut Creek. She also served as president of the Edwards High School Association in Gonzales for eight years spearheading the restoration efforts of the campus, establishing a computer lab and providing after school activities for school children. She also volunteered for the American Diabetes Association, March of Dimes, LBJ Booster Club, Delwood Northeast Optimist Club and Vacation Bible School.

Left to cherish her memory are children, Henry S. Ahart, Jr., Deborah Wells and son-in-law Rockley Wells, Reginald Ahart, Rodney Ahart, and Carmen Fields and son-in-law La Dre Fields; grandchildren, Destiney Wells, Rockley Wells, Jr., and Dayana Wells; sisters, Alfreda Freeman, Charlene Wellington, Maxine McClure, Thelma Lee Greathouse and brother Sidney Thomas; nieces, nephews, cousins and countless friends.

A celebration of her life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 20, 2007 at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 1010 East Tenth Street, Austin, Texas.
