He was killed in action at Sessenheim, France on 20 Jan 1945. Sessenheim is near the Rhine River 22 miles northeast of Strasbourg.

781st Tank Battalion Unit History/After Action Report: Co "A": Plans and orders were issued by Regimental; Commander 411th Inf Reg, at 190200 Jan 1945 (2 am 19 Jan) for a coordinated attack on Sessenheim with leading infantry elements to begin assault at 0630 (6:30 am) without artillery in ordrer to put them inside normal Mortar Fire that had been coming from objective and to facilitate surprise. A ten minute T.O.T. was to begin at 0645 (6:45 am) at which time the tanks were to begin their assault. Tanks and Infantry were to reach edge of town simultaneously. This plan worked successfully to the point where tanks and infantry joined and actual assault of town began. Then totally unexpected enemy tank fire from four to six Mark VI ("Tiger") tanks, with unknown number of self-propelled supporting, repulsed attack with loss of six out of eight tanks forcing infantry to withdraw to original L.O.D. This attack was an example of excellent coordination between tank and infantry, and except for insufficient information as to enemy tank strength in the town, would have been highly successful. Crew members of destroyed M4A3 ("Sherman") tanks reported direct hit with 76mm tank fire bouncing off turret and front slope plates of enemy tank, which is further proof of inability of present medium tanks to successfully fight the German Mark VI tank.

Remnants of company returned to Camp Oberhoffen for reorganization, detached from Task Force LINDEN at 21 0100 Jan 1945 (1 am 21 Jan) and ordered by Task Force LINDEN to revert to battalion control; subsequently reordered by 79th Infantry Division to report to another attachment.
