Susan Adney Straughan, lifelong citizen, dies
Susan Marcella Adney Straughan, 72, a longtime licensed practical nurse and Girl Scout troop leader, died Wednesday at her home, 618 W. Chicago St., Lebanon, following a lengthy illness.
She was a Boone County native, and lived all of her life here with the exception of five winters in Florida. She was a 1934 graduate of Lebanon High School, attended Indiana Central Business College and graduated from the Indianapolis Practical School of Nursing. She worked at Witham 12 years and previous to that was a secretary for Metzger Lumber Co., and Lebanon Utilities.
An avid reader and writer of poetry, she was a member of the Central Christian Church of Lebanon and a former member of the Centenary United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School. She also was a member of Tri Kappa Sorority, the Simple hours Bridge Club and the Mend and Chat Bridge Club.
She was the daughter of Earle and Susan (Kissell) Adney and married John Shelby Straughan in Frankfort July 25, 1936. He survives. A daughter Mrs. Thomas J. (Susan) Burrin IV, of Lebanon, survives as do two grandchildren and two great grandchildren. A half-brother Robert Adney, and a half-sister, Valeria Adney are deceased.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Myers Chapel of Memories with the Rev. Fred Sharp and the Rev. Dale Suggs officiating. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday.
