CHARLES NORMAN ADKINS, age 76, of Birmingham, passed away on September 20, 2006. He was a member of Mountain Chapel United Methodist Church.

He was born October 7, 1929 in Hueytown, Alabama, served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict on the USS Chloris and retired from US Steel after 40 years of service. He then became an independent businessman before selling his business 10 years later.

Passionately devoted to his family, faith and friends, he was lovingly referred to as "Gran." He was an avid University of Alabama football and Atlanta Braves fan.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years as well as his "baseball buddy," Billie Doles Adkins; two daughters, Karla (Paul) MacLaren of Clearwater, Florida and Karen (Andy) Hardage of Pelham; three grandchildren, James Wesley Sage of Birmingham, Adam Bradley Sage of Tallahassee, Florida and Andrea Christin Jackson of Pelham; two siblings, Mary Helen Raiford of Hueytown and David G. Adkins of Birmingham.

Visitation will be Friday, September 22, 2006 from 5 p.m.-8 p.m. at Southern Heritage Funeral Home. The funeral service will be Saturday, September 23, 2006 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Southern Heritage Funeral Home. Officiating minister, Rev. Tom Parrish. Interment will follow in the Southern Heritage Cemetery.
