Mr. Hiram "Duke" Duke, born in Ellenwood of Clayton County passed away September 3, 2009 at the age of 85. The son of George Raymond Duke and Effie May Adamson Duke. He attended and graduated from Forest Park High School in 1941.

Duke served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of WW II serving in the 66th infantry division in the European Theater where he received the American Theater Service Medal, EAME Service Medal with 1 Bronze Services Star. Duke was also on the S.S. Leopoldville which sank during troop transport Dec. 24, 1944. He was employed by Kraft Foods and also owned Duke and Jones Construction where he developed and built homes in the Clayton County area.

After his retirement in 1972, he moved to Ormond Beach, then to Bunnell FL. before returning to Jonesboro for the last six years. Duke was a charter member of the First Baptist Church of Conley, Ga. and was an avid NASCAR fan and did volunteer work at the Daytona International Speedway.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009 at 1 pm at Thomas L. Scroggs Funeral Directors with interment to follow at Sherwood Memorial Park. Dr. Jack Harwell will officiate. The family will recieve friends Friday from 5-8 pm.

Duke was preceded in death by his brother, William "Bill" Duke and sister, Raynelle. He is survived by an only daughter, Carol Duke Francis and her husband Michael L. Francis; brother, Jack Duke and wife Penny; sister-in-law, Yvonne (wife of Bill); Francine Watson Walker to whom he was married to over 20 years.
