Tony Adams age 76, of Mitchell died Thursday, November 19, 2009. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Tuesday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM Monday at the Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service at 7:30 PM. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery.

Tony Adams, son of Harold and Merle (Edgar) Adams, was born on April 12, 1933 in Warsaw, ID. He moved to Chamberlain, SD with his family in 1946 and graduated from Chamberlain High School in 1951. Tony received a bachelors degree from Huron College. While in Huron, he was named to the all SDIC Basketball Team and went on to play Basin League Baseball for several years. Later he was inducted into the Huron University Athletic Hall of Fame.

Tony was united in marriage with Janell Van Tour on August 6, 1954 in Chamberlain, SD. He had a passion for education and athletics. For several years Tony coached all sports in Montrose, Menno and Madison, SD before moving to Mitchell as a junior high coach and physical education teacher. He received a masters degree from the University of South Dakota in 1968. He remained in Vermillion as an elementary school principal before returning to Mitchell as a Principal of Whittier Elementary School. He enjoyed the times he supported his children in various activities, took family camping trips, and attended countless sporting events. He retired from the Mitchell School System in 1992 and wintered for several years in Arizona where he loved playing softball and golf. He also loved to visit his children and watch his grandchildren participate in their activities.

While in Mitchell, he was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, the Elks Lodge and many educational organizations.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Jan, Mitchell, SD; his mother-in-law, Juanita Van Tour, Mesa, AZ; five children, Peggy (Larry) Brooks, Sioux Falls, SD, Joni (Mark) Wegehaupt, Duluth, MN, Terry (Lindsay) Adams, Firestone, CO, Trish (Lorne) Aadland, Veblen, SD, Kyle and Jolene Adams, Murfreesboro, TN; 14 grandchildren, Jenna, Laura and Jacob Brooks, Tara (Malachi) Behrens, Tyler Wegehaupt, Carly Lucas, Lauren Adams, Cory (Jessica) Aadland, Nicholas and Riley Aadland, Courtney, Christian and Faith Adams; two great grandchildren, Chase Aadland and Claire Brooks; one sister, Martha Glissendorf, White Lake, SD; two brothers, Frank Adams, Cary, IL, Gene (Arla Mae) Adams, Riverside, CA; sisters-in-law, Irma Adams, Darlene Van Tour and Jackie Klinger; a brother-in-law, Jime Tielke; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his father-in-law, Robert Van Tour; a brother, Jack Adams; two sisters, Betty Tielke and Margaret Adams; one brother-in-law, Leland Glissendorf.
