John Milton Adams departed this life March 27, 2011. He was 94 years old.
He was born to John Jewett and Florence Ethel Burt Adams Nov. 13, 1916, in Toledo, Ohio. His family moved to Texas, where he graduated from high school and joined the Texas National Guard in 1934 and was discharged in 1939. He married his sweetheart, Ruth Alice Conway, Dec. 10, 1941. In August 1942, he was drafted into the Army for World War II and reported to Camp Walters, Texas, for officer's training.
He was sent to New Guinea with the 124th Infantry. After securing the islands around that area, his division moved to Morotai and Mindanao. They remained in the Philippines and were there when the war ended. After arriving home and receiving his discharge, he moved to Laramie a year later in 1946.
He ran a finance company in Laramie for over 25 years and served as Commander of the Engineer Battalion of the National Guard. In 1959, he was called to active duty with the Headquarters 1022nd to Fort Lewis, Wash., during the Berlin Crisis. He then served as assistant Adjutant General for State Affairs for the Wyoming National Guard for nine years. All together, he served his country in the armed forces for 38 years and received two Bronze Stars. In 2009, he was honored to go with his fellow World War II veterans from Wyoming to Washington, D.C. and view the World War II monument as well as other monuments and be honored there.
Taking advantage of Wyoming lakes, he had a boat, which he built, and loved to fish. His children grew up eating deer, elk and antelope. His grandchildren loved to go fishing with their grandpa.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Alice (Conway) Adams; two grandsons, Paul Conway Adams and Jacob Daniel Adams; and two brothers, George Adams and Richard Adams.
He is survived by his son, John C. Adams (Linda Little); daughter, Patricia A. Adams (Thomas M. Wasden); six grandchildren, Anna Adams, Karen and Ira Messenger, Mark Wasden, Kaylene and James Moore, Karla and Karl Kelsch, and Kristi Wasden. Also surviving are 14 great-grandchildren. Brothers surviving are Robert, Donald and Edward.
Funeral services will be Friday, April 1, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Montgomery-Stryker Funeral Home. Burial with military honors will follow in Green Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donate to your charity of choice.
