Clare “Mike” Adams served in the US Army in Europe during World War II from 1942-1946. He was employed by John Deere Waterloo Operations for 36 years, retiring in 1983. During his employment at Deere’s, Mike was very active in UAW Local 838, holding various positions until retirement. He was also a member of the Black Hawk Union Council, AFL-CIO. In 1982, he started and ran the Thanksgiving free meal for everybody in Waterloo area. From 1983 until December 1999 he remained active in many organizations and held positions of chairman of the UAW Region 4 and Local 838 Retires, Board member of Black-Hawk Grundy County Mental Health, John Deere Credit Union Board of Directors and the Cedar Valley Food Bank. He was a life-long supporter and activist of the Democratic Party. Mike was a member of the Moose Lodge and DAV. Mike received the “Douglas A Frazier Common Swift” award from the UAW International Union in August 1999. It is the highest award presented by the UAW as a tribute to Mike’s purpose in life, commitment to change, unity, and securing a better future for all.
