Catherine Gurley Adams was born in Oklahoma Territory in Blackwell on September 14, 1905, the first of four children of Herman and Pauline Gurley. She died November 5, 2007 at 102 years of age. A member of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority at the University of Oklahoma, she graduated in 1927 from the College of Arts and Sciences. Her Master's degree in Speech Pathology was from the University of Wisconsin. After returning to Blackwell, she established a speech clinic and traveled throughout the state directing high school plays. Moving to Oklahoma City, in 1934, she married Lynn 'Sandy' Adams who later became the General Counsel of Kerr-McGee Corporation. He died in 1979. They had two daughters, Linda Crabtree and Nancy Yoch. She was also much loved by four grandchildren, David Crabtree, Catherine Crabtree Ratliff, Michael Yoch and Stephen Yoch and two great-grandchildren, Brock Ratliff and Liam Crabtree. Her social life was very active. She was president of Nichols Hills Grade School and the Casady School Mothers' clubs and vice president of the Oklahoma City Art Center. She headed the speaker's bureau for the Women's Committee of the Oklahoma City Symphony Orchestra. After being elected to Oklahoma City's best-dressed list for three years, she was inducted into the Oklahoma City Fashion Hall of Fame. She was a Life Master in bridge. Other memberships included Coterie Club, P.E.O., Tuesday Study Club, The Seventy Five Club, The Lotus Club, The Queensbury Club, and the English Speaking Union. The Adamses were longtime members of the Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club, of which Lynn Adams was once the president, the Petroleum Club, the Beacon Club and the Tower Club. Funeral services will be at Hahn-Cook-Street & Draper Funeral Home, 6006 NW Grand Blvd, at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, November 9, 2007. Entombment will follow at Rose Hill Burial Park in the Abbey Mausoleum. A reception will follow at the home of Kevin and Catherine Ratliff.
