Robert Matthew Acosta

Robert Matthew Acosta of Pascagoula, MS, died Wednesday, June 26, 2013, in Winnfield, LA. Mr. Acosta was born January 22, 1923 in Plaquemine, LA. A United States Army Serviceman, Mr. Acosta was a decorated World War II veteran. He was a member of the 4th Armored Division serving as a Combat Infantryman throughout the European theater. In November 1944, near Thal, France, Sergeant Acosta earned the Silver Star Medal for gallantry and bravery on the battlefield by pulling a wounded comrad to safety. After further review of his service in World War II, Sergeant Acosta was awarded the Bronze Star Medal in 1992 for meritorious achievement in ground combat. He also earned the World War II campaign ribbon with five stars representing the five major battles in which his unit was involved. Following his honorable discharge from the Army, Mr. Acosta joined the Mississippi Army National Guard and achieved the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 3 after 23 years of service. After returning home, Mr. Acosta worked at Ingalls Shipyard as a welder, supervisor and superintendent retiring after 38 years of service. He was a member of First Baptist Church and secretary of the Adult VI Men's Sunday School class, a 32nd Degree Mason and Shriner, and a former champion Golden Gloves boxer. He volunteered for many years as a boxing coach and referee, Little League baseball coach, and at Keesler AFB in the base's medical clinic. Mr. Acosta was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years, Jean Goff Acosta, parents Anthony Acosta and Theodora Lodriguss Acosta; sisters, Bertha Acosta Kohler, Madeline Acosta Trabeaux, Evangeline Acosta Rotolo; brothers, Sidney Acosta and Maurice Acosta. He is survived by his sons Tony Acosta and wife Margaret of Winnfield, LA, and Benny Acosta and wife Terri of Pascagoula; grandchildren: Adrienne Acosta Daughtry of Pineville, LA, Rob Acosta of Pascagoula, Angeline Acosta DiBenedetto of D'Iberville, MS and Katie Acosta of Brooklyn, NY; and sister, Marjorie Acosta Hill of the Woodlands, TX. A faithful servant to his faith, family and country, Mr. Acosta leaves behind lasting legacies and memories to many. Visitation will be Friday, June 28, at O'Bryant-O'Keefe, Pascagoula from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. A funeral to celebrate his life will be held Saturday, June 29, at First Baptist Church in Pascagoula at 10:00 a.m. Pallbearers will be Rob Acosta, Jamie Daughtry, Josh DiBenedetto, Larry McGregor, Ryan Olsen, and Hartman Trabeaux, Jr. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Adult VI Men's Sunday School Class.
