John L. Achtzehn, 70, of Rostraver Township, died Friday, April 30, 2010, at his home. He was born Feb. 6, 1940, in West Newton, a son of the late Samuel and Grace (Zimmerman) Achtzehn. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, having been instrumental in the establishment of the church in West Newton. Prior to his retirement, he was the owner of Achtzehn Enterprises in West Newton. Previously, he worked in various positions within the insurance industry, including fire safety engineer with Motorists Mutual Insurance Co. Following retirement, he worked at the McCauley Funeral Home. He was a 50-year life member of West Newton Volunteer Fire Company, where he served as president for many years. John was a true example of being a volunteer, dedicating his time with the fire company and its Youghiogheny Ball Room, the former West Newton Ambulance Co., the youth sports teams in Rostraver Township, the Multiple Sclerosis fundraising golf tournaments, as well as his involvement in many other activities within the community. He was always concerned with helping someone or some cause. Along with his family and his volunteering, John's passions were golfing and woodworking. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Elizabeth S. Achtzehn; a son, Rob Achtzehn and wife, Lisa, of Whitehall; a daughter, Wendy Mensch and husband, Brian, of Wexford; four grandchildren, Adia and Eli Achtzehn and Brady and Brianna Mensch; a brother, Alvin Achtzehn and wife, Gerri, of Pleasant Hills; a sister-in-law, Connie Achtzehn, of Houston, Texas; three nieces, Lynne Little, Amy Leighton and Jill Bertini; and a nephew, Craig Achtzehn. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Samuel Achtzehn. Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the J. WILLIAM McCAULEY JR. FUNERAL HOME INC., 901 Vine St., West Newton. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Faith Lutheran Church, West Newton, with the Rev. Steve F. Bauer officiating. Everyone is asked to go directly to church. Interment will follow in West Newton Cemetery.
