Jose "Junior" Abeyta, age 81, a longtime resident of Los Vigiles, N.M., passed away on Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009, at his home following an extended illness.

He was born in Ojo De Caballo, N.M., on March 19, 1928, to the late Felipe and Laura Martinez Abeyta.

He was united in marriage at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Las Vegas, N.M., on July 18, 1980, to Maria Emilia Ortiz.

He retired from the Luther Ramsey Construction Company where he was employed for 25 years as a laborer. His hobbies were musica, playing guitar, fiddle, banjo and anything with strings. He enjoyed hunting, horseback riding and all his pets.

A lifelong Catholic, he was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church and a member of La Sociedad De Hermitanos and Rancheros Vistadores.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Felipe and Laura Abeyta; first wife: Lorenza R. Abeyta; sons: Jose and James Abeyta; grandson: Abel Abeyta; great-grandson: Channing Abeyta; brothers: Nick Abeyta, Cayetano Abeyta, Roman Abeyta, Rubel Abeyta, Tomas Abeyta and Trivinio Abeyta and sisters: Josie Lucero and Barbarita Abeyta.

He is survived by his wife: Maria Emilia Abeyta of the family home in Los Vigiles; daughters and sons: Velma Salazar and husband Max of Los Vigiles, Theresa Hernandez and husband Danny of Brighton, Colo., Ralph Abeyta, Tony Abeyta, Sr. and companion Sarah, Gilbert Abeyta and Leticia Padilla and husband Lupe all of Las Vegas, N.M.; Leroy Abeyta and wife Lloyda of El Rito, N.M., Victor Abeyta and wife Josephine of Las Vegas, N.M. and Gloria Abeyta of Fayetteville, N.C.; grandson raised as a son: Jose Noel Abeyta of Las Vegas, N.M.; special grandson: Dwayne Lucero of the family home in Los Vigiles; step-sons and daughters: Phillip Ortiz, Anthony Ortiz and wife Jane and Denise Ortiz all of Las Vegas, N.M., and Ignacita Larrañaga and husband Sean of Albuquerque; daughters-in-law: Charlotte Romero, Kathy Abeyta, Sylvia Abeyta, Irene Abeyta and Rosa Abeyta; 105 grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; sisters: Antonia Maes and Cecilia Pena both of Las Vegas, N.M.; brothers-in-law: Ray Rivera and wife Mary and Benerito Rivera both of La Manga, N.M., Joe Ortiz of Pico, Calif., Jr. Ortiz and wife Lena of Pojoaque, N.M. and Manuel Ortiz of Ft. Morgan, Colo.; sister-in-law: Elena Lujan and husband Adam of Rociada, N.M.; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Rosary devotional services were conducted on Tuesday evening at the Immaculate Conception Church. The mass of resurrection will be celebrated this morning at 9 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church with Father George V. Salazar as celebrant.

Interment will follow at the Sociedad De San Antonio Cemetery in Las Vegas with the following serving as casket bearers: Leonard Salazar, Tony Abeyta, Jr., Lupe Padilla, Jr., Steven Hernandez, Joseph Abeyta and Dwayne Lucero. Serving as honorary bearers will be all his remaining grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
